Maintained by William R. Hepburn. This list is in not meant to represent official usage.

Countries included :
1) ITU Preface (Terrestrial Services) : 'Geographical Areas'
2) UN M49 : 'Countries or Areas / Geographical Regions'
3) UPU Postal Addressing Systems : 'ISO 3166-1 Alpha Codes' in Antarctica
4) WMO No. 386 : 'Country or Territory Designators'
5) ICAO Location Identifiers : 'Index to Nationality Letters'
6) US.CIA : 'Country Data Codes'
7) Wikipedia : 'List of States With Limited Recognition', including Order of Malta
8) for Space entries only : MARC Code List : 'Geographical Areas'

A few countries designated are those areas "orphaned" between overlapping countries from different lists.
Non-ITU countries are listed under their associated ITU country.

Continent borders are those used in traditional Hammond atlases.

There is no attempt to list defunct countries here, as they are too numerous. Countries will be added and deleted as their status changes. Using a current list gives all DXers (rookie and veteran) a chance to DX the same # of countries, look forward to DXing new countries, or lament the loss of a deleted country.

Country names derived from English names found on postage stamps, or if none, literal translations into English.
Country names do not include government type except in the case of duplicate country names.

Country codes are generally chosen in the order shown above from 1) to 8), but there are exceptions determined on an individual basis (for example, official IOC codes are chosen over codes starting with X).
In some cases there are no known official 3-letter codes. Priority for selection is then : 1) Former ITU or ISO country codes, 2) WMO codes (with an X is placed in front.) ISO 3166-2 codes are not considered for use in DXIC Country Codes, only for Sub-Country Codes.

The appendix to this list - Radio Sub-Countries - can be found here.
